Who says iPhones can't replace all musical instruments by the year 2010? This handbell demonstration suggests that at least some instruments are dead already. I love handbell because each person in the row is responsible for just a few notes of a whole song. The Melody Bell iPhone app lets you tune your "bell" to whatever note you need to make the song, but just one note at a time, so you need to get together with friends to make it work, and shake it when your moment in the song comes. (An iPhone in each hand would be cool, though expensive.) I wouldn't have let that kid get in the way of an otherwise solid performance, but you can see the promise of this, and the sound is damn good. It may not be the first ensemble performance using iPhones, but it's probably the biggest—and most scalable—to date. [Product page and iTunes App Store link]

ZigBee and other home automation technologies may be all well and good if you want to keep things practical and whatnot, but if you're the more adventuresome type, you may want to take after Instructables member leevonk, who's pieced together this slightly unwieldy contraption. At the heart of the system is a webcam, a flashlight, and some photoresistors that detect changes in brightness on the screen they're so elegantly affixed to. To change that brightness, you simply shine the flashlight at the area the webcam is pointed to, which relays the image back to the aforementioned PC via Yahoo Messenger which, in turn, activates a series of motors that can be used to perform a variety of tasks. Practical? Not exactly. But it is inexpensive, and it sure is more fun than a couple of mouse clicks. Head on past the break to check it out in action.[Via Hacked Gadgets] Continue reading DIY home automation system brings back the lost art of flashlight controlFiled under: Misc.
