Using a cluster of 200 PS3s, an international group of researchers have crafted a "skeleton key" digital certificate that can perfectly impersonate any website on the internet. The weak point that allows the technique to work—which researchers will be detailing at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin—is the MD5 hash algorithm, which, basically, is what's used to create a fingerprint that makes it hard to forge digital certificates. Verisign's RapidSSL still uses the MD5 hash algorithm. So, where do the crack-friendly PlayStation 3s come in? Well, they have to generate CA certificiate—the certificate that allows them to sign and verify certificates for any other site—and a website certificate that produce the same MD5 hash. A cluster of 200 PS3s were used to figure out where the MD5 hashes of their forged CA certificate and website certificate "collide," allowing them to "crunch out their forgery in about three days." What's all this mean? David Molnar, a computer science PhD candidate, Threat Level talked to, explains it best: ""We can impersonate Amazon.com and you won't notice...The padlock will be there and everything will look like it's a perfectly ordinary certificate." Thankfully, the hack is hard, but the solution is pretty easy—just switch to a more secure hash, which many companies have done. Verisign is currently in the process of phasing out the MD5 hash. There's nothing wrong with Sony's Blu-ray remote for the PS3, but there's nothing especially right about it either. And as unwieldy as it may be, this generic 3-in-1 solution looks much better. The 3-in-1 Wireless Keyboard is first and foremost a Blu-ray remote, but it also appears to be a slider of sorts, packing full QWERTY and—if our eyes are telling us correctly—dual analog sticks. Especially for BD-Live content, the keyboard could make all of the text entry a lot more convenient than even Sony's own QWERTY option. And dual analogs? Really? The PSP doesn't even have that! We really wish there were more to the product's description, but if you're willing to make a gamble with $28.52 of your hard earned cash, let us know how it goes. [Superufo via Kotaku]

As if the PS3/360 hybrid controller weren't enough, one modder has stuck an entire Xbox 360 inside a PS3 shell. Despite the PS3's hefty stature, the fit was so tight that the modder had to slice down the actual cooling fan blades as to not disrupt other components. Oddly enough, the disc drive is still positioned on the left (a chunk was removed from the PS3 case so that the tray could extend) while the PS3's own elegant drive components go unused. Both the PS3's eject and power buttons still work, which was a nice touch. If you're interested in owning this PS360, it's actually on eBay. We'll pass until someone manages to fit both a 360 and PS3 into either system of choice. [eBay via N8bog Thanks Eric!]

Apparently impressed by the stunning success (and $157 winning bid) of his earlier Wii64, the modder who goes by the name n8bog is back with another brute-force console hybrid, this time shoving an entire Xbox 360 into a disused PS3 case. We wouldn't say it's a perfect fit, as there's been a rather large hole cut into the front to allow access to the tray, and that HDD just laying on top of the DVD-ROM looks a bit precarious, but if you have a hankerin' for something Microsoft but prefer the look of something Sony (or just really like gratuitous neon) all this can be yours at a starting bid of just $100. Any takers?Filed under: GamingXbox 360 + PS3 case + many Dremel bits = PS360 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Dec 2008 10:22:00 EST. Sony needs to step up the PS3 if it doesn't want to lose out to the Wii and Xbox.
